Minor League Recap: April 14-April 20

This recap is now a week late, and a lot has happened since then. For example, a whole entire week has passed! With that in mind (let’s throw in a little laziness as well), I’m going to leave out pretty much all analysis/commentary.

Weekly Summary

Norfolk (AAA): 2-5 (W-L), 22 RS, 37 RA

Bowie (AA): 1-4, 18 RS, 22 RA

Frederick (High-A): 4-2, 22 RS, 18 RA

The Good:

Hitters

Norfolk (AAA): 2B Jemile Weeks – 5/18 (H/AB), 2 2B’s, 1 3B, 9 BB’s, 4 SO’s

Bowie (AA): 1B Christian Walker – 8/19, 1 3B, 2 HR’s, 1 BB, 6 SO’s

Frederick (High-A): C Wynston Sawyer – 6/19, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 SO

Pitchers

Norfolk (AAA): RHP Mike Wright – 12 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 9 SO’s, 3 BB’s

His line from this week is a little bit better than it initially looks, as two of those 5 runs were unearned.

Bowie (AA): LHP Tim Berry – 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 SO’s, 2 BB’s

Third week in a row that Berry is named the best pitcher in AA. And in the 5 weeks total that I’ve been doing this (including the last 2 weeks of the 2013 minor league season), that is a record.

Frederick (High-A): RHP Branden Kline – 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 4 SO’s, 1 BB

The Bad:

Hitters

Norfolk (AAA): 2B Cord Phelps – 0/12, 1 BB, 8 SO’s

We’ve all experienced a bad week like this. But in our experience, that normally doesn’t happen in front on thousands of spectators while playing a game for a living.

Bowie (AA): C Michael Ohlman – 2/15, 1 BB, 5 SO’s

Frederick (High-A): INF Tucker Nathans – 1/16, 0 BB’s, 4 SO’s

Not as bad as the week Phelps had (see above), but pretty close.

Pitchers

Norfolk (AAA): LHP Nick Additon – 1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 SO’s, 3 BB’s

Bowie (AA): LHP Ashur Tolliver – 0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 SO, 1 BB

Tolliver only pitched a third of an inning, so there weren’t many good candidates for this spot. On the bright side, one of the 3 runs he gave up was unearned. On the not so bright side, he still gave up more earned runs than he recorded outs.

Frederick (High-A): LHP Matt Taylor – 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 SO’s, 4 BB’s

Not a bad line, but again, no real good candidates. The 4 walks are what really swayed the decision. Sorry Matt.
