Orioles Should Try to Acquire Justin Masterson

Posted in Pitching, Trades with tags , , on July 30, 2014 by oriolesprovingground

It’s July 30, and that means more trade talk.  Despite being in the playoff hunt, the Cleveland Indians have not only made Justin Masterson available, but they seem “very willing” to deal him.  Even though he’s having the worst season of his career and is currently on the disabled list (right knee inflammation), I think he would be an excellent fit for the Baltimore Orioles to try and acquire before the trade deadline.  So head over to ESPN Sweetspot Network Orioles blog, Camden Depot and find out why.

A Trade for Martin Prado Solves a Present and Future Problem

Trade season is heating up and like most contenders, the Baltimore Orioles find themselves only a few weeks away from the trade deadline with areas for improvement.  Second base happens to be one of those areas.  With talented rookie Jonathan Schoop struggling offensively, the team could use an upgrade to increase their chances of a playoff run in 2014.  Today over at ESPN Sweetspot Network Oriols blog Camden Depot, I explain why acquiring Martin Prado solves their issue at second base in 2014, but also takes care of potential roster problems in the future.

Orioles Starting Rotation (Still) Needs Improvement

Posted in Pitching, Trades with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on July 1, 2014 by oriolesprovingground

After a long vacation that didn’t involve any baseball, I’m back with my first post since early June.  Today at ESPN Sweetspot Network Orioles blog Camden Depot, I take a look at a very familiar topic that has seemed to pop up during the trade deadline and the offseason ever since I started writing about the team.  Writing about upgrading Baltimore’s starting rotation is quickly becoming a bi-annual tradition, where the names change, but the statistics stay the same.  Take a look at the article to see who I suggest they go after this time.

Nick Markakis’ Secret Platoon Issue

Posted in Offense with tags , on May 29, 2014 by oriolesprovingground

Nick Markakis is off to what seems like a very strong start to the 2014 season, hitting for a much higher average, on base percentage, and power than he was last year.  However, despite the early results and the fact that he already has an 18 game hit streak under his belt, there may be some underlying statistics that suggest that Markakis is not only having a worse season than it initially appears, but he may have a serious issue with left handed pitching.  Is it bad enough that he could potentially be a good platoon candidate?  It’s something I take a look at today over at ESPN Sweetspot Network Orioles blog Camden Depot.

Can History Tell Us Anything About Chris Davis’ Return from the Disabled List?

Posted in Offense with tags , , on May 15, 2014 by oriolesprovingground

Chris Davis came off the 15-day disabled list this past sunday after missing time due to a strained oblique.  Today over at ESPN Sweetspot Network Orioles blog Camden Depot, I take a look at similar players who have suffered the same injury and compare how they performed before their injury to how they performed after being injured in the hope that the findings will give some sort of indication as to what we can expect from Davis the rest of the season.

Tommy Hunter: Pitching on the Edge

Posted in Pitching with tags , on May 2, 2014 by oriolesprovingground

After trading Jim Johnson during the offseason, the Orioles were left without a closer.  They attempted to replace Johnson by signing Grant Balfour, but we all know how that ended.  Following the failed signing of Balfour, they looked at their in-house options, and Tommy Hunter emerged as the team’s closer towards the end of spring training.  Hunter has been pretty good so far, converting 7 of his 8 save opportunities.  However, it’s the way he’s been converting those saves that caught my attention.  Today I have a post on ESPN Sweetspot Network Orioles blog, Camden Depot that looks at how Tommy Hunter in the closer role will keep Orioles fans on the edge of their seats all summer.

Orioles Still Have a Problem Getting On Base

Posted in Offense with tags , , , , , , on April 11, 2014 by oriolesprovingground

Over the last 2 off seasons, one of the main issues the Orioles have needed to address was their lineup’s ability to get on base.  That issue wasn’t addressed before the 2013 season, as the team finished towards the bottom of the league in OBP, and was ranked dead last in BB% in the American League (ok, they weren’t DEAD last, they were tied for dead last).  While they made some newsworthy acquisitions during this past offseason, it wasn’t clear that they did anything to improve their on base skills, and two weeks into the season, it’s starting to look pretty obvious that they didn’t.  It’s very early in the season though, so do they have a chance to be a better OBP team?  I take a look at it today over on ESPN Sweetspot Network Orioles blog Camden Depot.

Is Brian Matusz a Realistic Starting Rotation Option?

Posted in Pitching with tags , on March 13, 2014 by oriolesprovingground

Brian Matusz was the Orioles 1st Round pick (#4 overall) in the 2008 draft.  After beginning his career with so much promise, he faltered badly and found has found himself in the bullpen for the past year and a half.  Despite his success as a LOOGY out of the ‘pen, there has been talk of returning him to the starting rotation for the second offseason in a row.  Today at ESPN Sweetspot Network Orioles blog Camden Depot, I took a look whether Brian Matusz’s chances at earning a spot in the rotation are realistic.  Fair warning, his 2011 season was atrocious, so you may want to cover your eyes during that section.

What Can the Orioles Expect from Matt LaPorta?

Posted in Free Agency, Offense, Offseason with tags , , on February 19, 2014 by oriolesprovingground

The Baltimore Orioles have been busy little bees the last couple of days by signing RHP Suk-min Yoon out of Korea as well as one of the best remaining free agent starting pitchers in right hander Ubaldo Jimenez.  Everybody is talking about them, and for good reason, because they both constitute the biggest signings the team has made so far this year (sorry Ryan Webb, but you’ve been bumped).

I’m sure I’ll discuss those two at some point, but since everyone else is discussing them right now, I figured I’d talk about Matt LaPorta.  Remember him?  If you do, get reacquainted with a trip down memory lane, and if you don’t, then get to know him.  Either way, head over to the ESPN Sweetspot Network Orioles blog, Camden Depot and see if the Orioles can find lightning in a bottle.

Could Ervin Santana Improve the Orioles Rotation?

Posted in Free Agency, Offseason, Pitching with tags , , on January 28, 2014 by oriolesprovingground

The Orioles have had a very slow offseason.  Sure they’ve signed approximately 57 outfielders to minor league contracts with invites to spring training i the hope that one of them can play in left at the major league level, but other than that and a couple of minor trades, it’s been pretty quiet.  One place they can still improve is in the starting rotation, where there are potential difference makers (albeit few) left on the free agent market.  Yesterday on ESPN Sweetspot Orioles blog, Camden Depot, Matt Kremnitzer took a look at one of those starting pitchers in Ubaldo Jimenez.  Today, I take a look at another, Ervin Santana.
